The Saint Thomas More/Newman Center Conference of St. Vincent de Paul
Our Parish Conference provides much needed and appreciated help to poor families in our community. Through a partnership with St. Vincent de Paul, we make brief but meaningful home visits, lend a caring ear and presence, and then write a voucher for items of immediate need – most often appliances, beds, furniture, household goods and clothing. These vouchers are then redeemed at St. Vincent de Paul stores (who then bill our Conference for half the value of goods received.) The families and their needs are referred to us through St. Vincent.
Our Conference has made hundreds of such calls and helped many families through out our community. We frequently visits families who have just escaped homelessness, gotten an apartment, but have no furniture. We can help provide a caring presence and a much needed bed or sofa or kitchen table or appliance. Our hearts and our help go out to these folks.
Our Conference is currently made up of 12 parish members. We meet monthly after the 11am Mass on the second Sunday of the month. We are supported by generous donations from periodic collections at our Parish. The work is very rewarding. We often feel that we, the Conference members, get more out of coming face to face with the poor than do the people we help. Our conference is always looking for volunteers, including:
Caseworkers to visit with people in their homes to assess their needs (bilingual volunteers are greatly needed). Training is provided, all you need is the willingness to make a time commitment. All visits are made in pairs.
Store volunteers to help with sorting, shelving and hanging donations, as well as helping in the food pantry.
Meetings
2nd Sunday of the month at 12:00 PM in St. Dominic's Room, Newman Center.
The St. Vincent de Paul conference here at the Newman Center is seeking volunteers. This volunteer position takes perhaps 3-4 hours/month visiting residences of people who have requested items such as furniture, appliances, bedding or clothing from St. V. We always visit in groups of two and are always touched by how thankful people are to get help. It is a truly humbling and fulfilling experience to be able to provide for people’s needs. There is a once a month meeting at the Newman Center after the 11:00 mass lasting one hour where we share our experiences.
This requires a very small amount of time and reaps great benefits for all involved. We are a group of approximately 12 and would love to share our experience and help you learn the ropes. If you are interested in learning more please contact one of these people: Paul and Sid Baum at 541 345 2186, Trudie Atkinson at 541 726 2769, Nancy Myers at 541 515 0089, Dave Tobin at 541 344 2500, Jerry or Patty Ragan at 541 342 8167, Carey Hilbert at 541 517 9651, Lorna Pletnikoff.
