St. Thomas More Catholic Church, Eugene
Annual Financial Report, FY 2018-2019
The 2018-19 fiscal year was a blessed one for Newman.  Overall, we are strong and doing financially well.  Praise God!
In this report we will review some of the changes and improvements that have been made at Newman this past year.  You will also see the parish's financial report for the 2018-19 fiscal year and our current operating budget for 2019-20.  I pray that this report will give you a good understanding of how St. Thomas More is doing as we move forward in the 2019-20 fiscal year.

eTapestry - Graphs and Trends:

Last year, we reported that in 2017 we implemented eTapestry as our new database program.  This system has allowed Newman to reduce it’s need for paper communication, helped us to expand our electronic giving program, and overall has allowed us to work more
effectively and efficiently.  Now, as we move into our second year with eTapestry we are able to track some interesting data.

In this Monthly Offering graph,
donations still continue to come in at an erratic pace in regards to the Offertory Basket giving over the year.

Recurring Giving has been more consistent with an expected spike during the Christmas season.

Picture

In this graph of Donations Year Over Year we see that our Recurring Giving program has leveled out between 2018 and 2019.

Also, we notice that Offertory Basket Giving is on the decline between that same period of time.

We would like to encourage our parishioners to take part in our Recurring Giving program.  It has many benefits for both St. Thomas More and you, the donor.
  • Consistency from month to month.
  • Accurate yearly budgeting.
  • Saving of resources - reduction in costs of offertory envelopes and in house printing.
  • Accurate tax deduction tracking for year-end giving statements.
  • Ease of mind for the donor with automated banking transactions.

Please consider helping Newman by signing up for Recurring Giving, if you have not done so already.
You can sign up by clicking the following link:

Your Treasures at Work:
Not only do your treasures support our Mission to bringing the word of Jesus Christ to the students of the UO, NCU, and LCC;  they also reach other non-profits that support the Eugene and Springfield communities.  None of that would be possible without your generous support.

Harvest for the Hungry 30,000 Meals
Last year Harvest for the Hungry collected funds in excess of $10,000.  Those funds went to Food For Lane County where they were used to help provide over 30,000 meals for those in need.

Christmas Gift for Newman
This program gave parishioners the opportunity to support the specific operating costs here at Newman.   Everything from the cost of electricity, to religious worship, to having the pond cleaned was on the agenda.  Last year the Christmas Gift program had over 75 participants raising over $50,000 to help underwrite operational costs here at Newman.  Thank you for your support.

Student Food Pantry

Donations during Ash Wednesday went to the Student Food Pantry to help fight food insecurities on campus.  Reverend Doug Hale is deeply appreciative of this long standing tradition.

Gala - FOCUS and Roof Campaign
At last year’s Gala we had two special paddle raises.  Support for FOCUS brought in over $12,000.  FOCUS missionaries work on campus engaging students and helping them to know and love our Lord Jesus Christ.  The Archdiocese of Portland will help with the costs of hosting them at Newman.  They will be paying 75% of their total costs of $60,000 per year.  The second paddle raise was for our church roof repair.  Over $22,000 was raised and with our current roof campaign we are close to achieving our funding needs.  We plan to start work on this project in the summer of 2020.

CCS - Drives
Each year our parish community helps support a number of Catholic Community Services’ various drives.  Whether it be the
Winter Clothing drive or the Squeaky Clean drive in the spring it feels like the CCS barrel in our lobby is always in need of emptying.  Thank you for supporting these much needed drives.

Campus Ministry:
Your support of Newman students gives them an opportunity to experience God's love through retreats, mission trips, Sunday Suppers and Food and Finals.  The bonds that they have made with  fellow students, the Newman Center, and God will hopefully last a lifetime.

Student Activities
Last year, our students were involved in a number of activities.  There is the weekly Sunday Suppers after the 7:30 evening Mass, and the Fall and Spring retreats to St. Benedicts Lodge.  Our students also attended the National SEEK Conference in Indianapolis and had ALPHA nights weekly.  The Catholic Daughters helped to serve the community by volunteering at the Interfaith Breakfast at the First Christian Church in Eugene.

Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS)
FOCUS outreach on campus consisted of bible studies, Adoration, small group events, conferences, and mission trips.  FOCUS Missionaries help to put on foreign and domestic mission trips with many Catholic organizations from around the world.  This last summer, two of our Missionaries and two UO Students teamed up with the University of Utah and Northern Arizona University to go on a mission trip to Chile.  They worked closely with the poor on the streets of Santiago.  Mission trips are a powerful way to see their faith in action.

Church Improvements:
Just like your own home, there are repairs and projects that are expected and some that are not.  It is no different here at Newman.

Big Leaf Maple Removal
In the summer of 2018 we discovered that the big leaf maple in the parking lot was rotted.  We had that taken down in August.  God was definitely watching over us considering the massive snow and ice storms we had last winter.

Dominican Basement Flooding Repair
Just in time for the holidays… the sump pump in the priest’s basement gave out and water flooded the basement during Christmas.  The water was removed, restoration care was given, and the pump replaced.  Thank goodness for insurance.

Fence Repair, Installation, and Garbage Relocation
This last year, repaired the fence on the north side of our parking lot and installed new parking blocks to protect the fence from future damage.  We also used the Archdiocese Safety Grant Program to pay for part of the new instillation of the chain link fencing on the south side of the property.   This was done due the a number of safety concerns.

Community:
We are blessed with a vibrant Newman community.  Last year we had a number of events that gathered the community together.

Parishioner BBQ & Christmas Lights Tour
In the fall we had our second annual Parishioner Appreciation BBQ with 130 in attendance.  We also had a fun and delightful Christmas Lights Tour where members of the community gathered together on an LTD bus and toured the holiday lights in town.

Webfoot Gala & Newman Beautification
In the spring, the Webfoot Gala was another popular event with over 175 in attendance.  And in July, several members of the community gathered to give back to Newman by sharing their talents of gardening and cleaning here at Newman.

Thank you for being a part of this community:
This parish has so much to be thankful for, but most of all it is our community members.  Without your gifts of time, talent, and treasure, Newman would not be the thriving church and center we are today.  Everyone that comes to St. Thomas More to pray and worship, to serve and help others, to gather in community as family, are the true blessings that God shines down upon this church.

We work hard to be good stewards of your gifts to Newman.   I thank you for supporting St. Thomas More and the Newman Center.
All that we do would not have be possible without your support.  As always, I invite you to stop into Newman with any questions that you may have.

Blessings,
Andy Roybal
