LECTORS
Lectors read the first and second readings at Mass. This job is perfect for those who enjoy public speaking, have clear pronunciation, reverence for the word, and are willing to prepare by showing up 15 minutes before Mass. You choose whether to serve weekly, monthly, quarterly, or as a substitute.
USHERS AND GREETERS
This ministry is all about hospitality. Ushers and greeters welcome students, families, and new faces at Mass. This is excellent for friendly and genuine people who can help others feel welcomed and connected!
Responsibilities include arriving 15 minutes before and staying 15 minutes after Mass, welcoming others at the beginning of Mass, communicating efficiently in large groups, wearing modest clothing, shaking hands, answering questions, taking up the collection basket, presenting the gifts, assisting parishioners during Communion, and disseminating the church bulletin after Mass.

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
Eucharistic ministers are laypeople commissioned to distribute Communion at Mass. This is perfect for Catholics 16 years and older who have reverence for the Eucharist, are comfortable with people, and have a desire to serve others. To qualify, you must have received the sacraments of Baptism, Reconciliation, Confirmation, and Holy Communion, and you must be married by the laws of the Church if you are married.
You can choose whether to serve weekly, monthly, quarterly, or as a substitute. Trainings are usually held the 1st or 2nd week of each Fall, Spring and Summer school quarter. Look for announcements at Mass, in the bulletin, and here on when a training is coming up.

MUSICIANS
Do you sing or play an instrument? Come join us! College students are encouraged to apply. Student commitment includes arriving two hours before the Sunday 7:30pm Mass and one hour before Saturday Mass.
Newman has various music groups for each Mass. University student musicians play at the 7:30pm student Mass while other groups play at the other Masses. ALTAR SERVERS
Altar servers directly aid the priest at Mass. College students are strongly encouraged for this position! This duty is perfect for those with an interest in serving people and reverence for the sanctuary.
Responsibilities include leading the procession into Mass, holding the Roman Missal for the presider, receiving the gifts and taking them to the altar, setting and clearing the altar, assisting the Presider with water and wine, serving a Cross Bearer or Candle Bearer, distributing the incense, and serving as a Miter or Cross Bearer.
Training includes one 2-hour one-on-one training with a priest and a trained altar server.

SACRISTANS
If you have a keen eye for attention to detail, love for the Church, and a desire to keep it clean, being a sacristans might be the perfect job for you! Being a sacristan includes caring for the sacred spaces, vessels, and objects such as the tabernacle, candles, linens, and more at St. Thomas More Church. Other duties include arranging flowers, decorating for Church holidays, polishing, and refilling supplies. You choose whether to serve weekly, monthly, quarterly, or as a substitute.
MASS COORDINATORS
Aa Mass Coordinator, you would be asked to coordinate Mass approximately 4-6 times in a 3-month period of time. Your role would be to arrive 15-20 minutes prior to Mass, help set up for Mass, and assist in problem-solving if an issue comes up.
This is an important role! It helps ensure that we have an organized Liturgy which honors Jesus in a loving fitting manner. Mass coordinators must be good leaders with patience, an ability to adjust quickly, willingness to gather others if help is needed, knowledge about the Newman building, and an understanding of all other ministry duties.
Responsibilities include getting ministers organized before the processional begins, making sure all positions are filled prior to the beginning of Mass, assisting visiting priests, bringing the Host from the tabernacle, purifying the Sacred Vessels, and cleaning up after Mass.
