Student Activities Leadership Team Application
Student leaders volunteer to help make the Newman Center a home away from home for the students of the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and Bushnell University, Our goal is to nurture an atmosphere of a faith filled experience that fosters friendships that last a life time. SALT members will have the opportunity to grow in leadership skills and style. You will be given opportunities to make a difference by living your faith at the service of others. SALT members work within various ministries to help fulfill the goals of the entire leadership team. SALT works as a team and helps to shape a memorable college experience! The Newman Center will provide leadership training at the Dominican Institute of Student Ministers (DISM) in Eugene Oregon July 18-22; you are strongly encouraged to attend this all expenses paid Institute. This is a wonderful time for SALT members to bond together as a team. We always have a great time and look forward to the exciting opportunities in the coming school year. |

Student leaders volunteer to help make the Newman Center a “home away from home” for the students of the University of Oregon, Lane Community College, and Bushnell University. We want everyone to have a fun, faith-filled experience and build friendships that last a lifetime. SALT members grow in leadership skills and style as they are given opportunities to make a difference by living their faith at the service of others.
SALT members are strongly encouraged to recruit other students and can form sub-committees to delegate responsibilities and work within various ministries. SALT works as a team! Thus, serving on SALT takes commitment, hard work, and flexibility with your schedule.

All Student Leaders will participate in the following ways:
- Attend SALT meetings
- Welcome new students and engage in conversations
- Actively combat formation of cliques
- Help organize spiritual and social events, themes, activities, etc. throughout the year
- Tabling on campus
- Responsible for set-up and take-down of events
- Recruit and encourage others (non-SALT students) in executing events
Available Positions:
Hospitality:
- Being a host at all events: make sure new students feel welcomed and are always talking to someone
- Assist Peer Ministers with Sunday meals and student socials.
- At the front door: welcome new students before and after both Student Masses
Social Justice:
- Coordinate community service activities throughout the year: 1-2 per term:
- Early in the term: give Peer Minister the date/time to put in calendars
- Organize short talks before or after event to focus on our Catholic understanding of peace and justice
- Begin and end activity with relevant prayer and/or theological reflection
- Advertise for social justice events
Spirituality:
- Work with Peer ministers in regard to Newman Nights that are faith building and catechetical.
- Is part of the Retreat Team
- Helps arrange Praise and Worship nights
- Helps set up for Wednesday Night Mass
- Ensure that a prayer is said at the beginning of all activities (i.e., find volunteers to lead prayers)
- Is a Lector and or Eucharistic Minister
Outreach:
- Reaching out to students: keep in contact with new students (email/call them)
- Walk with students to/from dorms for Sunday and Wednesday night Masses
- Keep an eye on the Carpool Co-Op (bulletin-board carpooling-list): make sure everyone has a ride to Mass or events if they want to attend
- Visit local high schools and high school youth groups to promote Newman
Social Activities:
- Facilitate discussion of theme ideas for Newman Nights
- Advertise for social events
- Coordinate Social Events:
- organize volunteers for decorating, set-up, clean-up
- be a Master of Ceremonies (MC)
