This year, our students have chosen to travel to Fairbanks, Alaska, to serve the Catholic Diocese and the people of Fairbanks. They will have the opportunity to connect with Bishop Steven Maekawa, O.P., while they serve the community.
The Diocese of Fairbanks is enormous, covering a massive 409,849 square miles - about two-thirds of the entire state. It is the largest diocese in the United States and is notably one of the poorest. Challenges such as poverty, homelessness, teenage suicide, seasonal affective disorder, drug abuse, and alcoholism affect every region in Alaska.
To make a difference, our students will forgo their spring break to serve in Fairbanks. While there, they will partner with local churches, the Newman Center at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and various non-profit organizations.
Our students will have the chance to share the gospel, work at a food pantry, serve hot meals, perform light construction and painting, meet with local teens and college students, visit the elderly, worship together, and learn what it means to be the hands and feet of Christ.
